About Iittala
The heart of Iittala’s design philosophy is formulated along Kaj Franck’s early thinking. According to Franck, “objects should always be appropriate, durable and functional.” This is why one of the most important functions of design is to make sure that objects designed for everyday use should be universally usable.
Iittala has many products for eating (including their
well-designed line of plateware), drinking, cooking and decorating
the home inspired by their philosophy of lasting everyday design against
throwawayism. These products are cornerstones of the famed Finnish
tradition of industrial design and have become collectors' treasures.
Among some of Iittala's most well-known and beautifully designed products are the Toikka birds. For over 35 years, Toikka's limitless imagination and knowledge of glass has made it possible to create small miracles of life, sought after by collectors globally. Each bird is individually mouth blown and thus unique, a gift that keeps on giving forever.
Iittala is a place for those who favour sustainability over consumption and want to create timeless, hand and mind-made objects for everyday use. Many iconic and original individuals have long been associated with Iittala and we are proud to continue the tradition with each new generation of designers from around the world.
